Democracy

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

In the United States, we elect representatives to create laws and policies for our nation. This seems to be a democracy, but it is really pretty far from it. Our representatives rarely seem to have our best interests at heart. Instead of creating laws and policies that make the most sense and are the best for the majority of the people, most laws seem to be motivated by media and lobbyists. Corporations with large amounts of money can hire lobbyists to get beneficial laws passed. I’m not sure what could be done about this but it seems that we should have better representation. Perhaps there should be more regulations against lobbyists (of course the lobbyists would lobby strongly against that). Another possibility, although unlikely and probably not feasible, would be to have interested Americans vote on the important laws, either through regular voting booths (referundum voting) or perhaps an online vote so laws could be passed by the citizens every day. But of course the citizens would then end up being lobbied by money as well. And people would have to spend much of their time thinking about and voting on laws, which is why we have representatives in the first place. I guess there’s no real solution to this problem, but the many imperfections in our democracy bother me.
