Todd’s 2002 NFL Preview
Wednesday, September 4th, 2002Well I’m a big football fan so I though I’d try my hand at trying to predict the playoff teams for this coming season. I figure since everyone else is always wrong, I can’t do any worse. There are two things to note that I read on ESPN.com. First, in recent years, the team to win the Super Bowl has been one of the teams that was shunned by Monday Night Football. Secondly, out of the six division winners, usually only one manages to repeat as division winner. However, most predictors still predict a team on MNF to win the Super Bowl and predict the majority of division winners to repeat. ESPN’s Tuesday Morning QB also noted that in the last three years, there have been over 300 predictions of who will win the Super bowl before each season, and only 2 have been correct. So the football predictors have odds of 1 in 150, worse odds than a random choice of the 32 teams. So I’m going to make two sets of predictions for this site: my own, and some done by a die. We’ll see who comes out ahead.
I’m going to predict the winners of each division, the wild card playoff teams, the conference champions and the Super Bowl champions. I’m also going to predict the Coach of the Year, League MVP and Super Bowl MVP. Then I’ll make some Patriots predictions. Here we go:
| ToddDivision Winners
AFC East: Patriots AFC South: Titans AFC North: Browns AFC West: Chiefs NFC East: Eagles NFC South: Saints NFC North: Vikings NFC West: Rams Wildcard Teams AFC: Dolphins, Steelers Champions AFC Champion: Patriots Awards Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick (Pats)

Ok, so I’m a little biased towards the Patriots. I think they could violate the so called MNF rule because they are only on it because they’re defending champs. Everyone still thinks they stink like the teams left off MNF. I tried to follow that rule about the division champions, although I still had the Pats, Eagles and Rams repeat as division winners. My random dice rolling came out with Bears over Colts, which is reasonable, but I’m sure no one predicted it.
Now anyway, my prediction for the patriots record is 12-4. Which would be really impressive considering that 8 of the 16 games are against teams that were in the playoffs last year. I can’t say with complete confidence that the Pats will win the Super Bowl again however. I’m sure they’ll go deep into the playoffs, but it takes not just skill and talent and coaching but some luck to make to and win the big game so you never know.
