Foundation,
Foundation and Empire,
Second Foundation,
Prelude To Foundation,
Forward the Foundation,
etc, by Isaac Asimov
These are my favorite books. A man named Hari Seldon develops "psychohistory" which allows him to predict the future for broad groups of people.
He plants a foundation at the edge of the universe to restart civilization after the empire collapses and the universe falls in the "Dark Ages"
The Robot Detective Books by Isaac Asimov:
The Caves of Steel,
The Naked Sun,
The Robots of Dawn
Detective books about a detective team of a human paired with a robot. The first novel is a murder on a human planet, then they go to robot planet, etc.
Dune, by Frank Herbert
About a young boy who moves to Dune, the desert planet, with his father. There is religion, philosophy, politics, action, and intrigue.
The Science Fiction Hall of Fame
A compilation of the best short science fiction stories from before they started giving out awards in 1965. My favorite is "Microcosmic God" by Theodore Sturgeon.
